Shape and Force Sensing Robotic Guidewire

The COAST Guidewire is the world's smallest tendon-driven robotic guidewire (0.36mm-0.89mm) designed for high-precision endovascular interventions. This project integrates real-time shape sensing and force feedback with Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors to improve localization and navigation in complex vascular networks.

Below is the demonstration presented at the Hamlyn Symposium on Medical Robotics.

Key Features

  • Novel Design: Novel steerable mechanism for reducing axial perforation.
  • Integrated Sensing: Real-time force and shape feedback for the surgeons and control systems.
  • Clinical Impact: Aimed at reducing radiation exposure, improving safety and reducing procedure time in neurosurgery.

Design Analysis & Robot Demonstration

This video covers the teleoperation and full-scale demonstration of the COAST robotic system through an aortic arch phantom model. This paper was published in Nature Portfolio Scientific Reports.
